Thoughts: On Tonto's skin bleaching and self-hate

Now that Big Brother Africa is over, the spotlight has moved from Beverly Osu back to Tonto Dikeh. Here's the video where she admits to skin bleaching:

First off, I really appreciate her honesty but I find it hilarious when she says that skin bleaching can be done right because she sounds like a scientist. Apparently, there are some bleaching creams out there that don't have hydroquinone, who knows? I highly doubt it that she does not use hydroquinone because her skin is just so much lighter. I also find it problematic because I feel that many people out there will get the message that bleaching is okay, because it can be done "right".

Self-hate?
Self-hate is usually believed to be the cause of the bleaching phenomenon. Tonto obviously thinks that being light-skinned is so much more preferable than dark-skin, and she alludes to this by proudly saying "Don't get me wrong, I've always been light skinned". I disagree with the self-hate thesis, and I DO NOT think that people bleach their skin because of low self-esteem either.

Charles (2003) defines low self-esteem as "a persons overall positive or negative attitude toward him or herself". A skin bleacher is obviously concerned with their body image, particularly their skin. We all know the politics of black skin, especially as it relates to the black female body. If you had a positive attitude toward your dark (or darker skin), why would you feel the need to make it lighter?

Charles study indicates that 9 respondents surveyed for the level of self esteem scored a median of 23/30. 7/9 respondents had self esteem scores over 20. Charles explains that the survey was carried out on adolescents who may be bleaching due to environmental influences rather than low self-esteem. Four of the respondents said they bleached because it prevented pimples. He writes that this is a very small sample of the Jamaican population, and there certainly are some skin bleachers who suffer from self-hate, however, this is not the entire story. He brings up an interesting point, that thousands of white tourists who flood tanning salons are not deemed to be suffering from self-hate. Double standards, anyone?

Decolonizing our minds
We need to decolonize our minds and re-teach ourselves that our standards of beauty should not be defined by European ideals. Black is beautiful! We say it so much but do we actually believe it and practice it?

He was born on Nov 27 1982 and is an actor and model.

Pearlle Kpop chat: We Got Married (Global Edition) episode 2 recap

It's been a while since my last recap of We Got Married. I've been watching every episode and I'm back to recapping. I'll to post a recap every day this week. Anyways, here's how episode 2 went:

Taec and GuiGui meet up, and their mission is moving into their new house. They walked up the road and found their new house quite easily.

Emma goes straight for the piano which Taecyeon deliberately prepared so GuiGui understands that his life is filled with music. Then they play the piano together, cuuute.

Honggi and Mina also find their house, but before that she makes him give her a piggy back ride.

Then they got to their house...

...and showed each other their talents, and that's how the circus couple is born.

Back to Taec and GuiGui. GuiGui asks him to carry her upstairs, just like in the movies lol

They get in bed, then Emma says she wants to act out some scenes from some romantic movies/dramas

I'm thinking, "Taec did not sign up for that, but you know what, I won't judge". Then this happened:

Honggi introduces Mina to their newlywed bedroom which happens to be empty because he wants them to decorate it together.

Then it was time to unpack their luggage, and this happened:

Meanwhile, Taec and GuiGui play in the snow.

Afterwards, it's time to decorate their house and GuiGui immediately does this lol (40:45)

Emma acts likes Superman with curtains
Mina shares her hobbies with Honggi, which include writing a film column and making dolls as a kid. They then played a Japanese traditional game, which Honggi lost.

Time for GuiGui and Taec to unpack their luggage. Starting off with a Chinese instrument GuiGui brought that neither of them could figure out how to play so they decided to use as a decoration instead. She also brought them matching aprons and a box of sweets for Taec.

She also showcased her 10 commandments of love which was pretty hilarious. Taecyeon's list was more reasonable but they disagreed over having breakfast. Taec likes to sleep undisturbed and not be forced to eat breakfast, while GuiGui doesn't like to have breakfast alone.

Thoughts
Emma is adorably cute, in a baby-ish kinda way. But Taecyeon is really patient with her which is great, and often even plays along with her. Honggi and Mina are a totally different story. Their dynamic is sort of odd, especially after Honggi aka Mr Fashionista decided to show off his prized possessions, which Mina wasn't too impressed by.

The Kiss: Skinship and fan-service between Will Smith & Jaden Smith

In this hilarious appearance on Thai TV, Will Smith and Jaden were promoting their movie 'After Earth'. Nothing better than a little skinship and fan-service to keep the Thai fans happy. Poor Jaden.

For anyone who isn't familiar with Korean/Japanese culture, many male celebrities pull "stunts" like this to keep their female fans happy. Nothing better than seeing your biases cuddle and get touchy-feely on stage.

Pearlle Kpop chat: Happy birthday Kim Hyun Joong

The leader of SS501 turned 26 today. Kim Hyun Joong is one of my favorite kpop stars, not cos of Boys Over Flowers but because of his Mr Nice Guy reputation.

Featured video: Jesse Jagz - Redemption

Jesse Jagz released the "Redemption" MV yesterday, and I am so mind blown by its originality and creativity. It's so refreshing that for once, a Naija artiste doesn't have a dozen girls shaking their butts at the camera, and men telling us how rich they are.

Jesse Jagz, Redemption
So much WIN!
I am absolutely loving Jesse Jagz new look. It's really simplistic and bad-boyish, and totally works for him. Props to whoever styled this video - it's simple, effortless and trendy. The video also reeks of symbolism, but maybe I'm reading too much into it.

"Redemption" is different from the Jesse Jagz I'm used to, so I wonder if this song was recorded after his exit from Chocolate City. I really like this Jesse. Kudos to Mex (Pixel Chaos) for directing this MV.

Recap: American Idol Top 8 male performances (March 28)

Let me just start off by saying how amazing Devin is and how disappointed I've been with America's votes the past 2 weeks. He is the most talented male singer in the competition and is very dynamic. Here's his performance yesterday:

I don't understand why his talent is not translating to votes :( Burnell on the other hand, has an amazing tone and can sing like crazy but he doesn't have that extra umph that Devin has. He's the same Burnell we see every week and it's becoming less special. Maybe I'm just Devin biased but I don't care!

Lazaro has lost his mojo and it aint fun to watch. I hate to say this but he's riding on sympathy votes. Like last week, talking about how he had just learnt the song. Well, everyone else just learnt the song too. He forgot the lyrics in his group performance today and his solo performance was alright. I really love Lazaro but he's the worst singer in the competition right now.

Here's the performance Burnell and Lazaro messed up. Watch how Devin outshines them and then Lazaro has the guts to say "we didn't know the lyrics that well" when it was him who messed up the most and Devin saved his butt..

Anyways, let's see how the votes play out tonight.

Pearlle Kpop Chat: Queen of Ambition review (ep 1 - 15)

I've been watching this drama on and off for about a month now. Where do I start? First of all, it has a lot of potential but it's not living up to it unfortunately. Here's the synopsis:

Joo Da Hae (Soo Ae) is the quintessential girl from the wrong side of the tracks. Growing up destitute, she develops the singular dream of becoming a trophy wife one day. But it’s not all fun and games when she sets off on a journey of conspiracy, greed and malice. Kwon Sang Woo stars as Ha Ryu, an innocent man who is so deeply in love with Da Hae that he’s willing to sacrifice everything — and commit the unfathomable.

Sounds exciting, right? Well the writers are really screwing this up and it's not even funny. The ridiculous plot centering around revenge is so childish and becoming really annoying. To start things off, here are a few typical Kdrama things Ha Ryu did for this evil bitch called Da Hae.

In addition to the typical cliche things, he paid for her bachelor's degree as well as her post-graduate in the USA while he stayed back in Korea to take care of their daughter. How did he get the money? By working as a stripper! By the way, Da Hae goes to school in the States because she's after a chaebol who she sees as her gateway to success. She starts dating him and they return to Korea together and she says to hell with her family and starts a new life. Did I mention that he also goes to jail for her? Yep, that happened!

Stuff happens and in their daughter dies under Da Hae's care. Also, turns out Ha Ryu has a twin brother who is a lawyer. Da Hae has him killed thinking it's Ha Ryu and in order to get revenge, Ha Ryu starts using his brother's identity.

That's where it's at (episode 15) and it's becoming really frustrating because I'm thinking of how ridiculously long it's taking Ha Ryu to get revenge.

Fashion
On to the fashion, here's what poor girl Da Hae's outfits looked like:

Her working class woman outfits:

Her 'I'm now with a chaebol' outfits:

WTF moment
There are many but this was one of my favorites: the scene where Da Hae gives Do Hoon's father his medicine and this is what it looks like candy!

Side note:
In case you were wondering how dramatic and fake kdramas are, here's a story for you. I was reading a news article about chaebols in 2013 and how they are being increasingly subject to economic regulations in S.Korea. The article mentioned the heir to the Samsung empire, the only son of the Samsung Chairman, Jay Y. Lee. I look up his name expecting to see some young, hot, dude. Here's what I see, enough said.

If it makes you feel any better, Siwon Choi is a chaebol and I'd choose him over Mr. Lee any day but good luck fighting the millions of ELFs around the world lol.

Look out for my next recap in a few days!
