Tuesday Tips: Calm acne-prone skin with Dickinson's Original Witch Hazel

It's Tuesday Tips on a Wednesday yalllz! But let me explain why: I'm taking 4 intensive summer classes over a 6 week period amounting to about 25 hours of classes per week. #aintnobodygottimeforthat

Anyways, back to my praise of Dickinson's Original Witch Hazel. This is not one of those products with a million ingredients that promises to do a million things. It's simple and gets the job done! I heard reviews about this product for years on Youtube before finally deciding to purchase it.

Ingredients:
All Natural Witch Hazel, containing Natural Alcohol 14% and Witch Hazel Extract

Yep, that's it! I use this every night after I take my makeup off and wash my face. Using this and aloe vera afterwards definitely cured my severe breakouts!

Thoughts: On white people who think they're a black hair encyclopedia after watching "Good Hair"

"Good Hair" is one of those films those films that I wish never happened. Chris Rock took a totally one-sided approach to black women's hair by only exploring weaves and what-not. Two problems I have with the film:

1. Chris Rock started off by talking about his daughter asking him "why don't I have good hair". It's been a while since I watched the movie but I'm sure he would have told her that her hair is beautiful just the way it is. Umm..so why didn't the movie draw more attention to my sistas out there who are rocking their natural hair? To be specific, not just black women rocking natural hair but those with long, healthy natural hair. Enter white people, who think anyone black woman with long straight hair is wearing a weave.

2. I know he's a comedian but he set out to make a documentary so the least he could do is make a decent one. Chris Rock ignored the reasoning behind black women relaxing their hair and wearing weaves. This is obviously why his daughter asked him about her lack of good hair because good hair is long and straight. Why do many black women think this way? Why do minority women feel the need to conform to this mainstream notion of beauty? This would have been a teach-in moment for all the ignorant white folks out there.

THE FOOLERY!
Back to my post about white people who think they're encyclopedias about black hair after watching this movie. This happened at work today:

White Boy: Don't you ever get tired of wearing your hair in braids?

I was just like wtf did you just say? This dude is great and all but come on! He then made a comment about how he knew my hair wasn't mine and watching the movie "Good Hair". He then made a comment like "if you say a black woman with long hair, you know it aint hers" He then asked me if I used coconut oil in my hair because his cousin who was adopted from Ethiopia uses it. Yep, that happened. He got called up to the bosses office (for a totally unrelated matter) but I was disappointed that I wasn't able to educate his ignorant ass! Damn.

I'm sorry non-black people out there, you have no right to make comments about our hair. Black hair brings with it economical, social and political costs. This is something we have to live with and I don't need you interjecting with "knowledge" you got from a Chris Rock film.

Tuesday Tips: Getting super long, super thick lashes

Over the past 2 weeks, these 2 mascaras have become my favorites, *drum roll please*

1. LOreal Telescopic Mascara Clean Definition
I've used this mascara on its own for almost a year. It doesn't clump the lashes and gives amazing length.

2. Benefit They're Real Mascara
Benefit They're Real

Immediately after #1, I use the Benefit mascara, and it increases the length and volume of my lashes. It does clump a little but nothing that can't be fixed. I got the Benefit mascara as a sample from Sephora two weeks ago and I'm now a huge fan. It costs $30 *sigh* but so worth it!

Try it!!

The fierceness that is Denrele Edun

Denrele posted this a few hours ago on his Facebook page, which reminded me that I need to give him a shout-out on Pearlle haha

Na wa o! Went to the SugarLoaf Mountain in Copacabana, Rio De Janeiro and I dressed up like I was going to the club! People look me like say I commot from outta space! But I was the Overnight Sensation! Everyone wanted a pic and I went to the peak of the mountain! But I fear to look down o!
If you're wondering who Denrele is, he is a Channel O presenter and used to present for Sound City. He's also Nigerian and is fierce as can be! He's known for his eccentric and unique fashion choices and being a really nice guy. He was also best friends with Goldie Harvey before her untimely death.

Love you, Denrele! Keep being you.

5 nail polishes I'll be repurchasing

Nail polishes sounds weird..anywhooo you know what I mean.

Nicole by OPI - He's A Keeper
I'm on my 3rd bottle of this because it's so bomb! It's a deep red vibrant color that would look great on any skin tone.
Claires Nail Polish - Stilettos
It's also a red polish but less warm than He's A Keeper and more long-lasting. Sorry I couldn't get a picture.

Maybelline Express Finish - Grape Times
It's an awesome unusual color. Not super long-lasting but long enough!

Rimmel Lasting Finish Pro - 360 Cherry Fashion
This is another red nail polish. I love red nails, you may have noticed a trend haha

OPI Nail Lacquer - Dim Sum Plum
I don't know how to describe this color and I don't know why it's called plum cos plums are red. This color is more purple-ish and absolutely beautiful.

Tuesday Tips: Make-up tips by Wayne Goss

Today's Tuesday Tips features Wayne Goss, a Youtube guru and makeup artist. He keeps it real on Youtube and always has very helpful tips to share such as the ones below:

THE 30 SECOND BROW
Wayne films 3 ways to fill your brows. I've never tried an eyebrow stencil so I can't really say I'm interested but the last tip is new to me. I never thought of brushing my brow down as opposed to up and then going against the grain of the hair to fill it in so it appears more natural. I tried it and it looks absolutely amazing. Wow!

HOW TO: TO STOP MASCARA FROM SMUDGING!
I don't experience mascara smudging but I know a lot of people do!

FLAWLESS SKIN WITHOUT FOUNDATION!
In this video Wayne explains how to achieve flawless skin using concealer alone. He has amazing skin so I'm sure it wasn't so hard to achieve. But I'm sure this technique can be used regardless of the skin difficulties a person might be experiencing since he uses concealer and concealer can be worked to buildable coverage.

Product Review: ELF Flawless Foundation and Gypsy Lipstick

Quick product review on 2 ELF cosmetics products. This company is the truth yall - affordable + quality products? You can't go wrong with that.

ELF Flawless Finish Foundation (Coco)
This foundation is amazing and it costs $6. It's creamy and full coverage and even if you don't wear full coverage foundation, it's always the way to go cos you can always sheer it down like Wayne Goss always says. Coco isn't my natural shade so I use it as an undereye foundation and it's great for this. The only thing I don't like about it is that after about 6-8 hours of wear, it starts to oxidize and get this yellow tinge, if you know what I mean.  Anyways, it's only $6 and worth trying out.

Elf Essential Lipstick in Gypsy
Beautiful reddish-pink lipstick that lasts almost 12 hours. I ate twice, chatted for hours with friends, skyped for 2 hours with the BFF and this stuff was still on. I even had a hard time getting it off when I was taking my makeup off. Best of all, I got a $0.10 discount and got it for 90cents instead of $1.

Style Spotlight: Just Smitten by Bum-Cake Vintage

We featured BUM-CAKE's amazing "Dazed" collection last year. Well, here's something from the vintage line. BUM-CAKE Vintage is a Brooklyn-based online destination for restored unique vintage clothing, accessories, and jewelry. BUM-CAKE embodies all that is vintage/retro through its unique products, which take you from the 1920′s-1990′s.

Bum-Cake's newest collection includes dresses, jewelry and accessories from the 1950's through the early 1990's. It's inspired by feminism, empowering women an making them feel beautiful and confident and the idea of being in love with one's self.

"The Smitten collection has great femme pieces that are perfect for the spring. Each piece is lightweight, which is nice for mildly warm weather. The palette of the collection is mainly neutral (including the printed pieces) with subtle details that encourage you to 'spring' forward in style this season. The prices range from $10-$65. Each piece can take you from day-to-night, making it the ultimate dynamic collection for spring."

I don't really do vintage. The most vintage I wear is probably earrings here and there that my mom passed on to me. I also have a plaid vintage party dress that I love to hate. My friend Kaidan loves vintage and she always looks absolutely amazing. Yesterday she had this ensemble she called the "frumpy librarian" look but it looked so right on her. I can totally see her rocking clothes from the "Just Smitten" collection.

The collection is available online for purchase or in person at the Built in Brooklyn Craft Fair on March 23rd in Brooklyn, NY.

For more information on BUM-CAKE Vintage, check out their website or shop online at their Etsy store. You can also follow them on Twitter or keep up on Facebook.

Tuesday Tips: How I moisturize & seal my leave-out

Moisturizing and sealing is a very important part of having healthy hair and retaining length. It's always best to seal with oil as this acts as a barrier to keep the moisture in your hair strands. Popular oils to seal with include jojoba and coconut oil as they are light and not greasy. I always notice less breakage whenever I M & S.

Ulovemegz explains and demonstrates how to moisturize and seal in the videos below:

Glowing skin | The dehydration experiment

We all want skin that glows like craaazy and looks healthy. You know how people who have good skin always talk about how much water the drink? I'm sure you know this already but it absolutely works and it doesn't even take that long to notice a difference.

I call it the dehydration experiment: I drank a ton of water for about 3 days and noticed how much nicer my skin looked. I didn't drink as much over a few days and noticed that my skin started to look more tired.

It's sort of like "duh" but it serves as motivation for me cos actually seeing the difference in my skin convinces me that I actually need to drink a lot of water because my skin likes it and thanks me!!
