Tuesday Tips: Helpful resources for language learners

There are many benefits of knowing a second language. Here at Pearlle, we've all had a love-hate relationship with French. Here are some tips to help you out in your language journey. Many of these resources are useful guides for learning a language on your own. If you're interested in learning in a classroom setting, contact your local Alliance Francaise or contact a local tutor. Let's get started:

Anki
A spaced repetition flashcard site. It is also available as an app on the iPhone and Android.

Tower of Babelfish
Gabriel Wyner, a former classical singer uses tips learnt in classical singing to teach people how to learn a language. Classical singers often have to understand many languages and get pronunciation right. He advises to start off getting the right pronunciation, not translating, using spaced repetition vocabulary and grammar then speaking.

Check out some of his videos to start off your pronunciation journey such as this one on English pronunciation and the IPA.

Lang 8Submit a piece of writing for native speakers to correct. You can also do the same for anyone trying to learn your language.

BBC French page
It's not really an in-depth page but it's fun, exciting and definitely worth checking out!

Radio
You can listen to radio stations from all parts of the world online which is a great tool for practicing your listening comprehension. Check out this page specifically for French radio.

Your local library
Often overlooked but your local (maybe even school) library will have many resources for language learning  such as books, Cd's and the like.
