Reminiscing Mondays: Celebrating Christmas in 4 countries

Earlier this year, Boma shared her memories of Christmas in Nigeria. We thought we'd share our memories of Christmas in the respective countries the Pearlle team have lived - Nigeria, Botswana, the US and Canada. Michelle briefly lived in the Marshall Islands but she never got to spend Christmas there.

Nigeria
Just like Boma's post, Christmas in Nigeria as kids was about food and clothes. Christmas day was a huge feast and before that day there was plenty of preparations such as the girls getting their Christmas hair done in the market so that they looked all fresh for Christmas. The most popular Christmas dishes are probably jollof rice, fried chicken, chin chin and soft drinks.

Botswana
Christmas in Botswana is remarkably different from how it is celebrated in Nigeria. We lived in Gaborone, Botswana's capital and it was always so mellow and chill. Most Batswana usually went home and so Christmas day was usually empty and deserted.

US/Canada
There's s not much of a difference between Christmas in Canada and that in States. When I think of Christmas over here, I think of Christmas cheer - carols, Christmas decorations, eggnog, ginger bread and candy and general goodwill. People go overboard for one day of the year, I don't get it.

Reminiscing Mondays is a weekly post by Pearlle Magazine's contributors, sharing their memories about growing up in Africa.
