Making a Difference: Amaudo UK

This month, we would like to give a quick shout out to Amaudo UK. This organization is doing amazing work.

Amaudo, which means Village of Peace started in 1990 and is the brainchild of Rosalind Nkechi Colwill, a social worker from the UK who was working for the Methodist Church in Nigeria. She noticed the increasing case of homeless people with mental health problems in Nigeria and gathered some local support to develop a project for Itumbauzo, a village in South-East Nigeria.

Amaudo Itumbauzo has since become a mental health pioneer in the region. This organization treats and supports hundreds of adults in their own homes. They also share education and awareness, reducing fear and stigma and preventing destitution and homelessness. Amaudo Itumbauzo supports individuals, families and communities.

Amaudo UK works to provide management and co-ordination assistance to Amaudo Itumbauzo, support volunteers and staff, and raise awareness of mental health and learning disability issues in Nigeria.
Amaudo UK and Amaudo Itumbauzo, Nigeria, work in partnership to implement accessible, affordable and sustainable systems of mental health care in Nigeria.

There are 5 projects managed by Amaudo Itumbauzo, each having its own Project Coordinator and staff. Here's some information I got from their website:

Amaudo Okopedi – centre for rehabilitation for adults with mental ill health

Amaudo Ntalakwu – long stay village for former Amaudo Okopedi residents and adults with learning disabilities

Project Comfort – community-based project for children with learning disabilities, this project works in partnership with Renew a project which makes specialist equipment such as wheelchairs and calipers.

Community Mental Health Programme … nurse lead clinics across five Nigerian States
Mental Health Awareness Programme – training staff and educating communities

Pearlle would like to congratulate Amaudo UK, as they recently celebrated their 10 year anniversary. We would also like to commend the Amaudo team in the UK and Nigeria on their mental health efforts in Nigeria.
