I don't mean to sound unpatriotic, but who else remembers those good ol days when Nigeria was on top in terms of sports?!! I ask because the Olympics is on, and Nigeria is yet to get a medal. Say whaaat?
We didn't qualify for soccer, the Basketball team did well by qualifying for their first Olympics but I've got to admit that it was a disappointing showing. Our dearest Blessing Okagbare came last in the 100m, and slalom canoist Johnny Akinyemi crashed out as well. I'm immensely proud of these athletes for representing our country, but I wish we had some medals to show.
I miss the days of Chioma Ajunwa, Mary Onyali, the Atlanta '96 soccer team and "wow soccer players" like JayJay Okocha and Kanu Nwankwo,
What is to blame for such a dismal showing in recent years? Corruption, poor infrastructure, Nigerian "politics"? Naija, e go better!
