Last week, I shared some of the favorite TV shows I watched as a kid
growing up in Nigeria. This week, I'm going to share my favorite South
African TV shows because South African TV is really entertaining and the
world needs to know this. Let's get this started:
Generations
I believe this is South Africa's most popular soapie, and it is soooo good! Aired weekdays at 8pm on SABC 1, it centers around the lives of two entertainment agency rivals. My favorite characters at the time were Queen (so bubbly!), Ntombi, Dineo, Kenneth & Zamani (Ajax's brother). I wish it was aired online so badly. I followed Gens blog religiously for a while but that isn't updated frequently anymore. Oh well..
Muvhango
This show is the ish!! It took me the longest time to become a fan because I would flip through channels and whenever Muvhango was on, I was so lost for words at how traditional everything was. It also wasn't in English so we would have to read subtitles. My mum started to follow Muvhango and so did I. Oh my gahd, the drama was intense!
My favorite character was Thandaza (right), she was so fierce and Meme was the annoying little biattch!
7de Laan
7 de Laan (7th Avenue) although cute and sweet, was also filled with drama. It's set in the fictional suburb of Hillside in Johannesburg where the characters live, work and play. It's broadcast in Afrikaans and occasionally, Zulu. My mum also made me start watching 7de Laan, it's so addictive. Whenever we got really busy and missed it, we would watch the omnibus during the weekend for hours. Good times. My favorite characters were Aggie, Emma, Chermaine, Hilda, Vanessa & Xander.
The characters in 7de Laan, save for a few were really likeable and relateable which I think is one of the reasons the show is so popular.
Isidingo
This show was really good, but always went through ups and downs. For a few months, it's really interesting and you can't wait for the next episode. Then it gets really boring and you want to change channels. Isidingo followed the lives of residents in the mining town of Horizon Deep as well as the ON-TV studios in Johannesburg.
I never really got to follow Isidingo too much because my family preferred Rythm City on e-tv. I was never a huge fan of Rhythm City until a few months before I left Botswana in December 2010. For the longest time, the only thing bearable about Rhythm City was Lungile Radu. Dude is fyyyyyn!
Honorable mentions:
3 Talk
Top Billing
Scandal
Jacob's Cross
