Look left, right, left: that's how we were taught to cross the road. Just because the "walk" sign is on doesn't mean it is 100% safe to cross. Always make eye contact with any driver turning or crossing the painted line before proceeding. No texting & crossing either. RIP Yuka, the Japanese student who was hit on Douglas-Humboldt (Victoria BC) on 13 August 2012.

Here are some more tips that should be helpful:
- Cross streets safely. Cross at a corner and use traffic signals and cross walks. Like stated earlier, even if there is a walk signal, always check (make eye contact) to make sure that drivers are aware of you, especially on turns and crosswalks. Never assume that the car will stop.
-Walk on sidewalks or paths. If there are no sidewalks, walk against traffic (i.e. so you can see cars coming in your direction).
- Always watch for cars that are turning or backing up. Be alert to engine noise or backup lights on cars in parking lots and street parking.
-Don't wear headphones or use a cellphone while crossing.
