Tuesday Tips: Get rid of difficult jar labels in 10 minutes

I'm saving old tomato sauce, jam jars, etc to use as spice jars. We know this: some labels are easy to remove and unravel once you tear of a bit of the paper labeling. Other labels are totally evil and take ages to get rid of the gooey gluey stuff that sticks the paper to the jar. Urrgh!

I encountered one of such jar labels recently and did some internet research in my bid to get rid of the label. I tried the baking soda method and the soap and water method, all of which did not work. After a few minutes of trying, I gave up. A few days later, while soaking a few dishes with hot water, I decided to try this out on the jars.
What you'll need
Hot water
Butter knife
Peanut butter

I poured a ton of hot water in a bowl and put the jar in it. The labels started coming off immediately. After soaking it for about 3 minutes, I used my fingers as well as the knife to scrape the labels and glue off.

I remembered reading about using peanut butter to remove jar labels, so I decided to do this. I slathered some peanut butter on the jars and the sticky stuff started sliding off after barely rubbing it. I rinsed the with water to see if any glue was left. I had a little bit left so I put more peanut butter on the jar, rubbed again and rinsed off. I also used some soap and water for a final clean.

Try this out!! Also look out for a DIY post on labeling jars on Wednesday.
