Pearlle Kpop Chat | Eat Your Kimchi interviews uBeat

Simon and Martina are cray cray and this interview with uBeat just felt really chill, like a chat between friends. I was really surprised when Eli said he wasn't recognized in Columbia, and how lonely he felt. Then again, it's Columbia. Students there must be huge bookworm.

Videos: Kpop's worldwide influence

EatYourKimchi
Kpop is here to stay!! I was going to post this over a week ago but school life kinda took over :( In this post, I share a few clips that sort of give you a glimpse into this influence I am talking about

This post was inspired by EatYourKimchi who ecently went to KCON where they were interviewed by the Verge. In case you're wondering, "KCON is the first-ever large scale convention dedicated to the hottest entertainment coming out of Korea including K-pop, K-drama and Korean movies."

Check out EYK's Verge interview:

With KPop having more dominance in the international sphere,  we've seen more non-Korean artistes covering kpop songs. JD Relic's cover of Bigbang's "Blue"

Tonye, our resident techie also made his version of GDragon's "One of A Kind" beat

With kpop being increasingly listened to by English speaking people, I find it hard to understand why most of the English/Korean songs have such horrible use of English, Engrish to be more specific. EYK said so on a panel they spoke at during KCON, it's as easy as hiring an editor. Some times the lyrics of these songs are cute like "gee gee gee baby baby baby" but sometimes it's weird stuff like "When you feel like there’s no way out. Love is the only way". There are more examples of Engrish in kpop but I'll leave it at that.

Long live kpop.

T-ARA's revamp and their "Sexy Love" MV

T-ARA - "Sexy Love" MV - video-still

I haven't talked about T-ara since the bullying incident (read about it herehttp://www.pearlle.com/2012/08/my-thoughts-on-t-ara-controversy.html) but they're out with an awesome new music video. Pretty brave of their label, CCM releasing this song barely a month after the controversy.

T-ara is now an 8-member group with the addition of Dani, a 14 year old girl who will start promoting with the group in December. The oldest member of T-ara is Boram who is 26, so it just feels wrong adding a 14 year old to the group because of the age difference. At 26, a woman is more mature, has more life experience and naturally would want to talk about such things that 14 year old ears should not be privy to. It's not necessarily about the age difference but the fact that Dani is a minor. Friendships defy age all the time and I would know because my best friend is 6 years older, and I have two other good friends who are about 11 years older than me.

Back to the song/MV: it's catchy and upbeat and I've already replayed it a few times. The robot dance is funny and they make it cute. The MV is doing better than I assumed it would, going by the number of dislikes. At the time of posting this, only roughly about a third of the ratings are dislikes which isn't bad.

Beep, beep, I love GDragon's "That XX"

Super quick post about GDragon's new video "That XX" which is a great song although not as great as "One of A Kind"

G Dragon That XX

The first time I heard this song, I thought it was boring but I listened to it a little bit more and I really like it. Love the beautiful melodies in the song, and love that GD (pictured above) was soft, sensual and also showed off his wonderful vocal ability.

GD who played 2 characters in this video (a good and bad guy) was really believable in both roles. It's funny because the bad guy G-D reminds me of how G-D's screen personality is: trendy and loud. While the good guy G-D is more subtle and plays it safe with his fashion choices.

This video already has almost 2 million views in a little over 24 hours which isn't surprising (it's GD!). The video was okay to me and it featured Jennie Kim, member of the new YG girl group debuting soon. She's 16 years old and GD is 24, so I think it's kinda odd that she was chosen as the female lead. Why not other older members of the group instead of a 16 year old? Nothing obscene was done in the video although it's called "That XX" and has an a 15+ rating.

This leads me to my next point: the annoying beeps through out the video. According to comments on the video, all G-Dragon said which was bleeped out is "bastard" which is considered a huge insult in Korea. I get that, but those beeps are really annoying!! The first time I listened to the video, I winced!

Anyways, check out GD's video:

Also, for those of you who don't understand what he's saying, here's an English translation of the song:

Lessons learnt from BIGBANG + free "One of A Kind" instrumental

BIGBANG's anniversary week comes to an end today :( Excuse all the BIGBANG posts but this happens once a year, non-VIPs out there. I would like to wrap things off with a more serious post about some important lessons I've learnt from BIGBANG.

Some VIP's have been fans of these 5 guys since day 1. So you know how far they have worked to get to where they are today. Newer fans may not really know this and may not be able to look past the glitz and glam that is BIGBANG today. Some VIP's may know BIGBANG's story but do not really think about it anymore.

BIGBANG

When BIGBANG comes to mind, I do not think perfection like some fan girls do. I recently read some comments from fan girls who were jealous of Barbie in the "One of A Kind" MV. Hilarious! Back to my point. I am glad that I can look past the surface (which looks pretty darn good. TOP's eyebrows anyone?), go deeper and appreciate not just the music but the passion, hardwork and determination that has brought them this far. Not everyone is familiar with the Kpop trainee process, but I'll do my best to explain how it works. An aspiring musician gets signed to a record label, and you become a trainee for a couple of years. Trainees are groomed day and night to become future stars by taking dance lessons, voice classes, media classes, modelling classes, etc and also combine this with school work. They hardly get a vacation or take breaks during this time. It is exhausting to say the least. Oh, and did I add that they live in dorms with other trainees? They don't get to see their families either!

Bringing this back to BIGBANG, G-Dragon and Taeyang were trainees for 7 years,  TOP was an underground rapper prior to joining the group and lost 44 pounds in 40 days in order to be accepted by YG entertainment. Seungri was quite the famous dancer, and Daesung who had little to no entertainment experience had to learn a lot in a little time to get on the same level as GD and Taeyang for example, who had trained for years.

Daesung has talked about almost getting cut due to his lacking sense of style and how much he had to grow as a person as a trainee. GD once shared that after YG CEO, Yang Hyun Suk asked the group if they thought their inner qualities were as good as the group's brand name image; he became more motivated by more than just the thought of success. But also putting their passion into the music they put out, and remembering to forget about the trends but stay a few steps ahead of others!

I find that really profound because if you look at these 5 guys, you have a recipe for success. Passion, hardwork and determination and staying ahead of the game! Imagine being a trainee for 7 years, I am sure that there were times that they wanted to give up but they didn't. Now look how much they have accomplished.

When the going gets tough and you're about giving up on that dream you desperately want to accomplish, think of inspiring people around you. Think of how hard they worked to get to where they are today If you're a VIP, think BIGBANG. Dreams do come true!!

G-Dragon, One of A Kind

Tonye, of Truevined Productions who is also a Pearlle contributor and our resident techie recently watched GD's "One of A Kind". He loved it so much that he created an instrumental based on the song. Check on it!

G-Dragon - One of A Kind (Instrumental)

So much swag in G-Dragon's "One of A Kind"!

As BIGBANG's anniversary week draws to a close, there's still more to celebrate. Thanks GD!! In case, you have no idea what I'm talking about. Here it is:

G-Dragon

The first thing that came to my mind after watching this video is "Dayummm, crazy swaaag!" Now, to those of us who know and love G-Dragon, this isn't surprising!! Isn't it so amazing how he can pull of the most ridiculous outfits and makeup and make it look so fly! Few people have that and GD does!! Spoiler alert, so don't proceed any further if you have not watched the video.

What about those adorable kids at 0:31, and G-D chilling with a tiger at 0:35. Seriously, what the heck?!! In times like these, we say "Oh well, it's GD" hahaha. The choreography is so weird but so fun, and dang, the chic in the beginning on GD's left (our right) is Lydia Paek and she can dance!!!

Check this dude getting slapped by Barbie at 1:42, and look out for a special surprise at 3:04. I knew I would love this song after watching the teaser video a few days ago, and I am not disappointed. I absolutely love it!

GD has come a long way and this music video and his album is all the proof you need. VIPs are so proud of you G-Dragon!

BIGBANG Playlist: 6 years of great music!

It's Big Bang's 6 year anniversary week people!! Yep, I have declared this important event a week long celebration. Your welcome VIP's :)) Here are my favorite BIGBANG songs (in no particular order), enjoy!

BIGBANG

Fantastic Baby
Many people said the video was "Lady Gaga-ish" due to how in your face their style was. This video did not remind me of Gaga because Gaga is not the only person on earth with an out of the box sense of style, and there were people before Gaga who also expressed themselves quite loudly in terms of fashion. Anyways, this video is really awesome!!

Monster
I love this song!! It took a while for the video to grow on me and although I appreciate the creativity, it's not my favorite BIGBANG video

Blue
It's hard to choose a favorite Big Bang song of all 6 listed here, but this one is pretty high up. Stunning video too!

Haru Haru
Is there any VIP out there who doesn't like this song? Probably not. These dudes can act as they clearly showed in the video.

Love Dust
Don't know what it is about this song but it makes me really happy!

Love Song
Very unique and nicely done video! G-Dragon's voice in this song is just so pure and moving.

Here's to 6 fantastic years of BIGBANG!

Hey VIP's in the world, today is our wonderful group's 6 year anniversary. 6 years, 6 freakinnnnn years!! These boys have come so far and I am really proud of them. Here's what G-Dragon uploaded earlier on their website:
Big bang, GDragon, BIGBANG

Thanks to Allkpop, this is translated as:

“Already…no, finally!!! It’s our 6th anniversary

Always thankful and sorry, so it makes us want to work harder!

Forever in your debt VIP!

Still Love VIP’s!

I'm so touched by this message and I shout out to the VIP's out there. Those who've been with them from Day 1, those who've supported them through the ups and downs and those who are just starting their journey with Big Bang. They couldn't have done it without you.

Last but not least, thank you BIGBANG for making amazing music. Thank you G-Dragon for your creativity. Thank you TOP for your wonderful humor & persistence (and also for the wonderful hair colors lol). Thank you Taeyang for sharing your warm heart and childhood innocence with us. Daesung, thank you for that bright smile and your adorable-ness; and finally, thank you Seungri  for being the caring maknae.

Here's to 6 more years of BIGBANG!! BIGBANG hwaiting!

My thoughts on the Spy MV and Super Junior in general

I recently watched Super Junior's "Spy" music video and I like it. But what's up with Super Junior always dancing inside a room with reflecting floors and lose ceilings? I've almost began to expect this from SuJu: fancy clothes, nice dancing in a room. Nothing wrong with this but I was just pointing it out.

Anyways, back to the video: I really love how sophisticated their style in this video is. I think the video makes the song bearable because I really don't like this song. The chorus reminds me of a badly made jingle, but they look good though lol.

For anyone wondering why SuJu's numbers keep fluctuating, here's why: Super Junior debuted with 12 members. Kyuhyun joined the group later & Hankyung left the group as a result of his SM lawsuit claiming unfair treatment. Kibum is not an active member of the group as he focuses on his acting career. Kangin, who has returned to the group was away on military service while Heechul is away on military service. Don't forget Zhou Miss and Henry who are part of the Chinese subgroup, Super Junior-M. Leeteuk will also be leaving for military service soon :-(

In other unrelated news, here are my favorite SuJu songs in no particular order:
1. Sorry Sorry
Yep, pretty much the song that made the group

2. Mr Simple
3. Sexy, Free & Single
4. It's You
If I had to choose a fav SuJu song, this might be it! The MV is also quite special because it is the last one with all 13 members :((

5. Seoul Song
Yeah, I know it's with SNSD but it still counts to me!

My thoughts on the T-ara controversy

I am a huge kpop fan and I love T-ara. There's been some controversy going on over the past week or so which resulted in Hwayoung being kicked out of the group. For anyone who's not familiar with the controversy, read this to get a good idea.

t-ara
Here are my thoughts, and I'm going to keep it short:

We don't know T-ara although fans would like to think that they do. We don't live with them and we don't exactly know what went down. The videos, back-up dancer allegations, netizens claims, etc don't really mean much to me because they have not been too convincing. I am not saying that Hwayoung was not bullied, but I'm not saying that she was. My point is that we don't know what happened because we were not there!

Despite the fact that the online petition asking for T-ara to disband has gotten over 100k signatures, I do not think this is necessary. I believe the group should be left to run its course and it is no doubt that their popularity is dwindling, so they end up breaking up eventually.

Korean culture is different with regards to treatment of the "maknae" of the group and I understand that. However, I really believe that this will be a huge wake up call to bands that have similar issues going on. We need to treat everyone with respect! Hwayoung has been kicked out and I am sure that this is a difficult time for her. I hope she is surrounded by people who love her and have her best interests at heart. I wish Hwayoung a successful career post T-ara.
