Aamer Rahman on Reverse Racism

Racism is a real and current issue that needs to be discussed; a very serious issue.
But, a good skit about "reverse racism" like Aamar Rahman delivers here can help lighten the mood.

Check it out; It's just so good!!

Featured video: Jesse Jagz - Redemption

Jesse Jagz released the "Redemption" MV yesterday, and I am so mind blown by its originality and creativity. It's so refreshing that for once, a Naija artiste doesn't have a dozen girls shaking their butts at the camera, and men telling us how rich they are.

Jesse Jagz, Redemption
So much WIN!
I am absolutely loving Jesse Jagz new look. It's really simplistic and bad-boyish, and totally works for him. Props to whoever styled this video - it's simple, effortless and trendy. The video also reeks of symbolism, but maybe I'm reading too much into it.

"Redemption" is different from the Jesse Jagz I'm used to, so I wonder if this song was recorded after his exit from Chocolate City. I really like this Jesse. Kudos to Mex (Pixel Chaos) for directing this MV.

Featured video: Udo by ESTAR (formerly of Resonance)

Writing today's Featured Video post makes me incredibly happy!!

ESTAR, Esther Ebigbo, Udo, Resonance, Nigeria
Fierce bantu knots!
Almost 7 years ago, this duo called Resonance released some AMAZING music. You know how some songs receive massive airplay,  right? Well, Resonance had many of those and this was in Bauchi, Nigeria. I can't imagine how much airplay they received in other parts of Nigeria but I know it must have been incredible. Then they stopped releasing music and fell off the face of the earth Nigerian music scene.

Chinwe Ike gave me goose bumps and I still get goosies whenever I watch the video. Their CD (music video compilation) was one of the first CD's I ever owned. I don't remember how many times I replayed all the videos. My sisters and I still replay their songs from 2006 lol..it's an oldie but goodie. TL; DR: Esther Ebigbo (aka Estar) is the bomb diggity. I know no one says bomb diggity any more but I thought it's hilarious. I know that they were a duo but Esther did all the singing and I connected with her voice. Anyways, Resonance split and that was it.

You can imagine my excitement when I found out that Estar is now releasing new music. Say whaaat?!! Omg check out her new music video.

It's very indie-ish. Basically, if Nigeria had an indie music scene, this song and the video would fit right into it. So calming and although her voice has changed a bit, it's still amazing. I feel like the nature of the song probably didn't let her showcase her vocal ability as much. I also like how different the song sounds and the fact that it's not one of those 'club bangers' that don't make any sense but becomes an instant hit.

I wish she was more sociable though! Come on gurrrrl, get yourself an official Twitter, Facebook and Youtube account. This aint 2006 gurl! In the meantime, check out her website!

Update (March 12):
Esther does have social media. Follow her on Twitter: @estar411 and Facebook. You can also subscribe to her on Youtube

Featured video: 15 year old Sierra Leonean wows M.I.T.

15 year old engineering whiz, Kevin Doe lives in Sierra Leone where he uses spare parts found in trash cans to build transmitters, batteries and generators. Kevin uses the transmitter he built to broadcast a local radio show under the name "DJ Focus". Kelvin recently became the youngest person in history to be invited to the "Visiting Practitioner's Program" at MIT. This trip to MIT was also his first trip out of his hometown.

In this video account of Kevin's trip to the US, we get to see the incredible opportunities Kevin was exposed to such as being a practitioner at MIT's media lab.You also get to watch as Kevin deals with homesickness and shared his thoughts of the future.

Apart from Kevin, someone who stood out in this video was David Sengeh. David is a graduate student at the MIT media lab and the founder of Innovate Salone - a mentorship program for Sierra Leonan youth who need help developing their ideas. It was modelled after MIT's innovation competition with judges selecting eight finalists who receive $500 to continue development of their projects.

As a result of the viral video featuring Kevin, Innovate Salone has reached 50% of their 100k donation goal. David's hope is that with the help of Innovate, young people are able to develop their own solutions.

Featured Video: Another community carries out jungle justice

For this month's featured video, we'd like to share Nigerian comedian, Bovi's video. This was done as a response to the recent Aluu4 murders

Here's what he says about the video:
"We owe it to ourselves and society as individuals, groups and/or organisations to preach against the growing trend of jungle/mob justice. if we fold our arms and watch, thats akin to throwing stones into a market. one day, it might hit one of our own."

I am so glad that although it's been about 3 weeks since the students were killed, Nigerians are not sweeping this under the carpet. Earlier this week, M.I Abaga released his song Ashes, dedicated to the Aluu4.

Sign this petition for an Aluu4 Mob Justice Prohibition Bill here.

In the words of M.I:If I die alone. Let it be more than dying alone, the reason I’m gone.
When we’re all ashes…
Let it be worth
Let it be so some other can live. Let it be birth.

Featured video: Mental Health Foundation Nigeria

This month`s Making A Difference post featured the Mental Health Foundation of Africa`s Nigerian wing. Our featured video will also feature this organization doing amazing work in Nigeria.

In this video, MHF shares the silent suffering that many Nigerian sufferers of mental health illn3ess in Nigeria are going through. The Founder and CEO of MHF, Owoyemi Emmanuel shares that sufferers of mental health illness in Nigeria were once like every other Nigerian and were once loved members of our society, but are now abandoned and neglected.

He says his organization is a call to Nigerians to show more regard to citizens walking around the streets in miserable conditions, and living under bridges, as well as to provide help to those on the brink of a breakdown. He adds that no one can perform at their maximum potential if depressed, and we must fight depression.

The Mental Health Foundation is a voice to make the case of sufferers of mental health illness in Nigeria, as well as draw attention to their plight and get the nation to help them out.
